Fashion Corner: What to Wear to Your Next Legal Support Interview

When you step into an interview, you want nothing to stand in the way of communicating your strengths as a legal support professional to the interviewer. Your clothing can help bolster this impression – or it can hinder you.

Here’s what to consider when planning what you’ll wear to your next legal field interview:

  1. What Do Other Professionals in This Job Typically Wear?

The advice “Dress for the job you want” offers a good rule of thumb for interviews. You want the interviewer to be able to picture you performing the job from day to day, and one of the best ways to do that is to dress like the people in the office who already do that job.

Find out what people in the office typically wear, and dress at or slightly above that level. For instance, if others in the office typically work in shirtsleeves, wear your suit jacket. Examine how the staff presents themselves to clients or in court and dress so you’ll fit right in.

  1. Which Outfit Makes You Feel Most Confident?

If you’re faced with the choice between several different outfits, choose the one that makes you feel the most confident. For instance, if you’re choosing between two equally appropriate suits, pick the one you feel more confident and comfortable wearing.

Try on the outfits you’re considering before you make your decision. You’ll get a feel for which one works best in the moment, and you’ll also be able to examine each outfit for any work you may need to do before the interview day.

  1. Are All the Pieces of Your Outfit Clean, Pressed and Neat?

Once you’ve chosen your outfit, look at each piece closely. Are there holes, loose threads or odd stains? Does everything fit well?

Fix any problems you spot before the day of your interview. Many stains can be removed by washing or dry cleaning, for instance. Loose threads may be snipped, and some (but not all) holes can be mended so they are invisible.

Do this step well in advance of your interview. If you need to replace an item, you’ll have plenty of time to find a piece that feels comfortable, confident and professional.
