Should You Apply for a Legal Support Job a Second Time?

You applied for a legal support position with a law firm or legal department that offered everything you were looking for in a job.  You scoured the job posting, realized you were a great fit, and fired off a cover letter and resume.  Maybe you even interviewed for the position.  Then came the dreaded form letter: “We regret to inform you….”

Now, the same position has reappeared in your local job postings – or your recruiter has recommended it to you.  Should you take a second chance?  In most situations, the answer is yes.

Don’t assume the employer remembers you.

The longer it’s been since you last applied, the less likely it is that the person handling hiring this time around remembers you.  Approach this application the way you would a “first” application: focus on tailoring your resume and cover letter to the job description in a way that highlights how you’re a great choice for this job and this organization.

If the posting has been recommended to you by your recruiter, mention that you applied for the same opening once in the past.  Your recruiter may ask more questions: Whom did you speak to?  What application materials did you provide last time?  The more information you can provide, the better your recruiter can support your second attempt.

Emphasize what’s changed in the time since you last applied.

Mentioning that you’ve applied for the same position once before can work in your favor – if you handle it well.  Use this fact to emphasize your interest in working for this law firm or legal department.  Then, focus on how you’ve grown and developed in the time since you last applied for this job opening.  Talk about specific new accomplishments and skills you’ve acquired, courses you’ve taken, or credentials you’ve earned since your last application.  You’ll demonstrate your interest in this employer and show that you’re committed to your own career growth.

Team up with your recruiter.

Perhaps your recruiter pointed you towards the latest posting of the job you want – or perhaps you found it during one of your own job search sessions.  In either case, don’t hesitate to seek out your recruiter’s help and feedback.  If your recruiter recommended the position, chances are good that your recruiter can also help you tailor your application and prepare for success in your interview.
