Legal Support Job Interview? 6 Tips to Help You Make a Great First Impression

Here it is: your interview with a great law firm or legal department for a position as a legal support professional.  Your job is to stand out from the crowd by demonstrating just how much you have to offer.

When you’re out to make a great impression, it helps to start on the right foot.  Here are six ways to make an outstanding first impression that puts you first in line with the hiring manager:

  1. Get “on your game” the night before. Start your interview day the night before. Plan your outfit and make sure everything is clean and pressed.  Eat a good dinner, review your interview notes, and then relax – and go to bed at a reasonable time so that you are well rested for the interview itself.
  2. Interview in the waiting room. Most people think of their interview as beginning when the interviewer asks the first question. By this time, however, the interviewer has already formed a first impression of you – for better or worse.  Make it better by acting as if you are “in the spotlight” from the moment you enter the parking lot. Introduce yourself to the receptionist, prepare quietly, and leave your phone in your car so you aren’t tempted to take calls or get lost in a game of Candy Crush in the waiting room.
  3. Bring enough for everybody. Legal support professionals are responsible for double-checking the details and planning ahead. Demonstrate your grasp of these key skills by bringing spare copies of your cover letter, resume, and any writing samples or other work.  Offer these to the interviewer as soon as you enter: “I’ve brought you an updated copy of my resume.”
  4. Be discreet. Legal support professionals aren’t just detail oriented; they also understand the confidential nature of legal work and practice it. If you’re asked about prior projects or your relationship with a contentious boss or co-worker, be prepared with answers that don’t reveal key identifying details or attempt to blame the other person.
  5. Interview the interviewer. Interviewees who respond to “Do you have any questions for me?” with “not right now, thanks” guarantee themselves last place on the callback list. Remember, you’re also here to decide if this employer is right for you.  Prepare two or three questions you’d like answered.  When in doubt, ask a solid fallback question: “What do you like most about working here?”  The answer will tell you a lot about the organization’s culture and approach.
  6. Show your enthusiasm. Many interviewees try to act serious and reserved, thinking it makes them look more professional. If you’re in love with the job, however, let your enthusiasm show!  And don’t forget to send a prompt thank-you note after the interview to demonstrate your continued interest.
