Are You Sending the Wrong Signals When Interviewing?

It’s important to be professional when interviewing. But it’s equally important not to send the wrong signals – which can also happen. Here’s how to communicate your ability, enthusiasm, and interest at your next job interview:

  1. Do your research. The more you understand about an organization, the people who work there, and the job for which you are applying, the more your interview will resemble a conversation between peers. Skip your research, and your interview will feel more like an interrogation – to both you and your interviewer. Failing to arrive prepared sends the signal you’re not interested in the job or you don’t think it’s important. Both of these leave a strong negative impression.
  2. Show your enthusiasm. Many job applicants check their enthusiasm at the door when they enter an interview, considering it “unprofessional.” In fact, if this is the job for you, make sure the employer sees it! Let your eyes light up, your posture straighten, and your voice become more animated as you and the employer discuss the day-to-day requirements of the job and what you can offer the organization. In the final analysis, hiring managers remember the candidate who showed genuine interest – and are more likely to hire that person.
  3. Put your nerves in the backseat. Fidgeting, answering questions too quickly, talking too fast, or “freezing up” all indicate you’re nervous – which also could make others in the room nervous, too. Preparing for the interview will help tame your nerves. If you feel yourself getting anxious while you’re there, take a deep breath. Be willing to pause and collect your thoughts before answering each question so you say what you mean, not what your nerves produce.
  4. Work with your recruiter. Recruiters do more than simply match legal support professionals with job openings. They also act as coaches, helping you ensure that nothing gets in the way of your ability to express your skills, experience, and passion for your work. Take your recruiter’s advice seriously, and ask questions about the interview process to ensure you give your best performance.
